EVH have hit it out the park once again; the 5150III 15W LBX-S Head manages to pack a seriously punchy, classic tone into a compact 15-watt amp design.
Tonal Blend
Don’t be fooled by this amps small dimensions – it still manages to punch well above its weight. It combines a Red ‘full burn’ channel, with a green ‘clean’ channel. This makes for a nice contrast between the two. You get cleans of astounding clarity which are juxtaposed by a high-gain, modern British sound.
Using the footswitch, harness the powerful, fiery overdriven tones (that’s perfect for lead playing) of the Red channel; or, if you prefer, turn up the gain for a more blues-influenced sound on the Green channel.
Excellent Engineering
This lunchbox head is equipped with two JJ EL84 power tubes and four JJ ECC83S (12AX7) preamp tubes. Alongside this, there’s shared EQ resonance/presence controls and dual-concentric gain and volume controls. These ensure you have precise, separate control over each individual channel.
Ready for the Home, Studio, or Stage
Wherever you like to play, this head is ready for the challenge. A 1/4 power switch can be used to lower the head to 3.5 watts – which is especially useful if you don’t want to disturb your neighbours. It can also be used when playing live (or in the studio) for a tighter, spongier sound. A one-button footswitch, effects loop and dual parallel speaker output jacks only increase the units versatility further.
Visual Embellishments
A black front panel combined with a metal grill cage makes for one seriously sleek looking piece of gear. It’s then stamped with the immediately recognisable EVH logo. Not a fan of the streamlined colour palette though? No worries – EVH have solved that too. A built-in LED backlighting system bathes the cage in red or green (matching whichever channel you currently have selected).
